On December 19, 2006 The Commissioners Court of Cameron County approved the creation of the Mental Health Task Force. A survey conducted by the University of Texas at Brownsville- School of Health Sciences revealed the lack of sufficient mental health services to included psychiatry in the Rio Grande Valley.

Over 25 organizations and concerned citizens have joined as partners to address this important issue. In 2008 the Task Force established 501 (c) 3 non profit status and is currently supported by the Resource Development Subcommittee, local donations and other external funding sources.
